Some are calling this incident "Denier-gate. "The Heartland Institute has long had a reputation of spreading climate misinformation. DeSmogBlog posted: "Heartland Confirms that it Mistakenly Emailed Internal Documents" Major media outlets covering this story include the UK's Guardian: "Leak exposes how Heartland Institute works to undermine climate science;" The Christian Science Monitor: "Documents reveal Koch-funded group's plot to undermine climate science;" BBC News: "Openness: A Heartland-warming tale;" The New York Times: "Leak Offers Glimpse of Campaign Against Climate Science;" plus Andrew Revkin's NYT blog: "The Heartland Files and the Climate Fight." In their story, "Claiming it is a hoax victim, skeptic group insists climate change will be only a 'bad memory'," E&E News reported: "The Heartland Institute acknowledged yesterday that it accidentally released sensitive budget materials identifying secret donors and its disappointing fundraising commitments to someone who had masqueraded as a member of its board." The LA Times, in their report,"Climate change doubter Heartland Institute documents leaked," cites a fundraising plea by Heartland based on this incident (as reported by Mother Jones).

UPDATE: An admission. In a post on his Huffington Post Blog, Dr. Peter Gleick admits to directly soliciting the leaked documents from Heartland, see "The Origin of the Heartland Documents." And from Nature Newsblog, "'Climate-gate’ researchers enter Heartland debate." The UK's Guardian followed up with "Gleick apology over Heartland leak stirs ethics debate among climate scientists."

Forbes magazine was brought into the fray as it is mentioned in the leaked documents, Forbes has posted this on the matter: "Heartland And DeSmogBlog Square Off Over Incendiary Documents"
